Board Development Plan
About This Course
Board governance is not primarily a structural problem. It is a leadership problem. A board with perfect procedures and disengaged members will still fail. A board filled with people who genuinely own the mission and trust the executive will find a way to govern well even when the structures are imperfect.
This course works from that conviction. It starts with the interior life of the leader, moves through the practical foundations of building and maintaining a healthy board, examines the governance philosophy that separates functional boards from merely compliant ones, and arrives at the question that sits underneath all of it: are the people around you becoming leaders because of their relationship with your ministry?
You will finish with a complete Board Development Plan: a one-year roadmap for your board built section by section across the full course. It is designed to be a working tool, not a completed assignment.
Primary Deliverable
Board Development Plan
A complete one-year roadmap covering your board's current state, development priorities, recruitment pipeline, onboarding plan, champion development expectations, governance philosophy, board-executive partnership protocols, a champion-to-board pipeline, and board culture commitments. You will build it progressively across Sections 2, 3, and 4, and bring it to your coaching conversations for review.
What You Will Cover
Section 1 • 4 lessons
The Leader Behind the Leadership
Most leadership development programs skip the most important part. This section starts with the interior life of the leader: your beliefs about money, generosity, and God's provision. Who you are becoming shapes everything about how you lead.
Section 2 • 10 lessons
Building Your Board
A healthy board is one of a ministry's greatest assets. A confused or disengaged one is one of its heaviest burdens. This section covers the practical foundations of board governance: roles, responsibilities, recruitment, onboarding, and meeting mechanics. You will draft your Board Development Plan here.
Section 3 • 8 lessons
Governance and Partnership
A board can follow every procedure correctly and still be functionally useless. This section examines why, and what it takes to build a board-executive relationship grounded in genuine governance rather than compliance. You will add a governance philosophy layer to your Board Development Plan here.
Section 4 • 8 lessons
Champion Leadership
The most important question in this section is not how to manage your board. It is whether the people around you are becoming leaders because of their relationship with your ministry. This section presses on character and calling, and you will complete your Board Development Plan here.
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."
Ephesians 4:11-12
How to Use This Course
Work through the sections in order. Each one builds on the last. The Board Development Plan you begin in Section 2 will be incomplete until you finish Section 4, so resist the temptation to finalize it early.
Each section ends with a short knowledge check and a real-world assignment. The assignment is not just an exercise: it is the course asking you to take something you have learned and apply it to your actual ministry context before moving on.
Bring your Board Development Plan to your coaching conversations at the end of Sections 2, 3, and 4. Your Area Lead will help you review, pressure-test, and strengthen it.
