This Privacy Policy describes how Mission Increase ("Mi," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information in connection with Mi Academy, the online learning platform operated at learning.missionincrease.org, including the Mi Advisor AI-assisted learning companion.

This Privacy Policy applies to:

  • Visitors who use Mi Academy without creating an account, including those who use Mi Advisor to draft a Case for Support without subscribing.
  • Subscribers to any Mi Academy plan (Basic, Plus, Premium, or any future plan).
  • Individuals invited to join a Premium subscription as additional seat-holders.

By using Mi Academy, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Mi Academy.

This Privacy Policy is incorporated by reference into the Mi Academy Terms of Service. Defined terms not specifically defined here have the meanings given in the Terms.

2. Who We Are

Mi Academy is operated by Mission Increase, a US-based nonprofit organization headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Mission Increase operates as part of a family of related and affiliated organizations under common governance (collectively, "the Mission Increase family of organizations"). References to "Mission Increase," "Mi," "we," "us," or "our" in this Privacy Policy include the Mission Increase family of organizations as appropriate to the context.

3. Who Can Use Mi Academy

Mi Academy is intended for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals under 18. If you believe a minor has provided personal information to Mi Academy, please contact us at miacademy@missionincrease.org and we will take appropriate steps.

4. Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use Mi Academy.

4.1 Information from Non-Subscribers

Some Mi Academy features are available without creating an account. For example, anyone can take the Case for Support course or use Mi Advisor to develop a Case for Support draft without subscribing.

If you use these features without an account, we do not require you to provide personal information. During a Mi Advisor conversation, Mi Advisor may proactively invite you to share your name and email address so we can save your work and so we may follow up with you about Mi Academy. Sharing this information is optional, and you may continue using Mi Advisor without providing it. If you choose to share your name and email address, we will store that information together with your conversation and may use it to contact you with information about Mi Academy. You can request deletion of this information at any time as described in Section 9.

4.2 Information from Basic Subscribers

When you sign up for a free Basic subscription, we collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your organization's name

Account creation uses our Single Sign-On (SSO) process, which establishes your login credentials linked to your email address.

4.3 Information from Plus Subscribers

When you sign up for a paid Plus subscription, we collect everything listed for Basic subscribers, plus:

  • Your cell phone number
  • Your organization's Tax Identification Number (Tax ID)

4.4 Information from Premium Subscribers

When you sign up for a paid Premium subscription, we collect everything listed for Plus subscribers, plus:

  • The email addresses of the two additional individuals who will receive seats under your Premium subscription

By providing the email addresses of additional seat-holders, you represent that you have permission to share those email addresses with us for this purpose.

4.5 Information from Invited Seat-Holders

If you are invited to join a Premium subscription as an additional seat-holder, we receive your email address from the Premium subscriber who invited you. We use that email address solely to send you the invitation. Once you accept the invitation and create your own account, you become a subscriber under this Privacy Policy with all the rights described below. If you do not accept the invitation, we will retain your email address only for as long as the inviting Premium subscription remains active, and we will delete it when that subscription ends.

4.6 Payment Information

When you subscribe to a paid plan, payment is processed by Stripe, a third-party payment processor. Stripe collects your payment card information directly. Mission Increase does not collect or store your full payment card details. We receive limited information from Stripe to confirm successful payment, such as transaction confirmation, last four digits of the card, card brand, and billing zip code or postal code.

4.7 Information Collected Automatically

When you use Mi Academy, our learning management system (LearnWorlds) automatically collects technical and usage information, including:

  • Your IP address
  • Browser type and version
  • Device information
  • Login times and frequency
  • Pages visited within the platform
  • Course progress and completion status
  • Quiz and exam scores
  • Time spent on learning activities

We use this information to deliver the service, track learning progress, troubleshoot technical issues, ensure platform security, and improve Mi Academy.

4.8 Information from Mi Advisor

When you use Mi Advisor, we store the text of your conversations, your user identifier, timestamps, the course context in which the conversation took place, and any documents or drafts produced through the conversation. The technical architecture of Mi Advisor is described in Section 6.

4.9 Community and Interactive Content

If you use forums, discussion boards, comments, peer-interaction features, or other community features within Mi Academy, we collect the content you submit, associated account information, timestamps, and related interaction data. Other users may be able to view content you choose to post in shared or community areas. You should not post confidential, sensitive, or personal information that you do not want other users to see.

4.10 Information from Publicly Filed Form 990s

For Plus and Premium subscribers, we use your organization’s employer identification number or other nonprofit tax identification numberTax ID to verify your organization’s nonprofit status and to access your organization’s publicly filed IRS Form 990 over time. We do not request individual Social Security numbers or individual taxpayer identification numbers. We use this publicly available data to measure how engagement with Mission Increase correlates with organizational outcomes, which helps us improve our services and demonstrate impact. We may publish findings from this analysis in aggregated and anonymized form, such that no individual organization is identifiable. We do not publish identifiable information about your organization without your consent.

4.11 Cookies

Mi Academy uses cookies that are necessary for the platform to function (such as keeping you logged in and maintaining your security session) and functional cookies that remember your preferences (such as your language selection). We do not use cookies for advertising. We do not use third-party analytics cookies; our usage reporting comes from LearnWorlds' built-in analytics.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

To deliver Mi Academy. This includes giving you access to courses, tracking your progress, processing your payments, and providing customer support.

To improve our services. This includes analyzing usage patterns, improving course content, refining Mi Advisor's helpfulness, and developing new features.

To communicate with you. This includes transactional communications (billing, account security, renewal reminders, service notices) and marketing communications about new courses, Mi events, promotions, and ministry highlights. Marketing communications include an unsubscribe link in every email.

To measure ministry outcomes. As described in Section 4.10, we use Tax ID information together with publicly available 990 data to measure organizational outcomes and demonstrate impact. We publish only aggregated and anonymized findings.

To comply with legal obligations. We retain and disclose information as required by tax law, regulatory requirements, court orders, and other legal obligations.

To protect Mi Academy and our users. This includes detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, and violations of our Terms of Service.

6. Mi Advisor: How It Works

Mi Advisor is an AI-powered learning companion integrated throughout Mi Academy. Because Mi Advisor is built on a multi-service architecture, we want to be especially transparent about how it works and what happens to your conversations.

6.1 Technical Architecture

Mi Advisor combines four external services:

  • Anthropic Claude API generates Mi Advisor's responses to your messages.
  • OpenAI is used for content moderation of incoming messages and for knowledge retrieval.
  • Pinecone is a vector database that stores Mi's own curriculum, methodology, and reference content. Pinecone does not store your personal information.
  • Supabase is a cloud database hosted in the West US (Oregon) region. It is the system of record for Mi Advisor conversation sessions, message history, and generated documents.

When you submit a message to Mi Advisor, the message is first reviewed by OpenAI's content moderation service. The message is then used to retrieve relevant content from Mi's knowledge base in Pinecone. The conversation, along with that retrieved content, is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a response. Both your message and the response are stored in Mi's Supabase database as part of your conversation history.

6.2 What Mi Advisor Does Not Do

We do not use your conversations to update or retrain Mi Advisor's knowledge base. Changes to Mi Advisor's knowledge and behavior are made deliberately by Mi staff through a separate content ingestion process.

6.3 Confidentiality Between Organizations

Mi Advisor conversation sessions and generated documents are scoped to your individual account. A subscriber from another organization cannot see your Mi Advisor conversations or documents, and you cannot see theirs.

6.4 Mi Staff Access

A limited number of Mi staff have administrative access to Mi Advisor conversation data for purposes of providing learner support, resolving technical issues, ensuring service quality, and complying with legal obligations. Access is granted on a need-to-know basis.

6.5 Anthropic Data Retention

Mission Increase does not currently maintain a data processing agreement with Anthropic or OpenAI that includes zero data retention. Conversation data sent to Anthropic or OpenAI for AI response generation is subject to Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s standard API terms of service. This means a portion of conversation data may be retained by Anthropic or OpenAI for limited purposes such as safety monitoring and abuse prevention, in accordance with Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s standard practices. Organizations with elevated data privacy requirements should review Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s terms of service directly.

6.6 What to Avoid Sharing

Because Mi Advisor is not a closed system and uses third-party AI and infrastructure providers, you should not share sensitive personal information, financial account details, passwords, or confidential third-party information with Mi Advisor. This includes Social Security numbers, bank account or payment card numbers, health information, confidential ministry records, and legally privileged information.

7. How Long We Keep Information

7.1 Mi Advisor Conversations

We retain Mi Advisor conversation data for as long as we have a legitimate business interest in retaining it, including supporting service improvement and enabling continuity for returning subscribers. We do not automatically delete Mi Advisor conversation data when you cancel a subscription or close your Mi Academy account. You may request deletion at any time as described in Section 9. In determining retention periods, we consider the nature and sensitivity of the information, the purposes for which it was collected, subscriber expectations, legal, accounting, and reporting obligations, security needs, dispute-resolution needs, service-continuity needs, and whether the information can be deleted or anonymized.

7.2 Account Information

We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. When you close your account, we retain account information as necessary to comply with legal obligations (such as tax records and financial transaction records, which must be retained under applicable law) and to resolve any outstanding matters. Information beyond what is legally required to retain is deleted or anonymized.

7.3 Marketing Communications

If you opt out of marketing communications, we retain a record of your opt-out to ensure we honor it. We may retain your email address on a suppression list to prevent future marketing.

7.4 Backup and Archival Data

Information stored in backup systems may persist for a limited period after deletion from active systems. This is a standard practice that allows recovery from technical failures. Backup data is not used for any operational purpose and is overwritten according to our retention schedule.

8. How We Share Information

We share personal information only as described in this section.

8.1 Service Providers

We share information with third-party service providers that help us operate Mi Academy. Each provider is bound by contractual obligations to use information only as instructed by Mission Increase and to maintain appropriate security:

Provider Purpose
LearnWorlds Learning platform hosting (accounts, courses, progress data)
Stripe Payment processing
Anthropic AI response generation for Mi Advisor
OpenAI Content moderation and knowledge retrieval for Mi Advisor
Pinecone Vector database for Mi's curriculum content (Mi Advisor)
Supabase Conversation history database for Mi Advisor
Weglot Multilingual translation services
HubSpot Email service (marketing and transactional emails)

8.2 Affiliated Mission Increase Organizations

We share information among the Mission Increase family of organizations for operational purposes, including providing services, conducting research, measuring impact, and communicating with subscribers. By using Mi Academy, you consent to this internal sharing.

8.3 Contractors

Contractors engaged by Mission Increase for specific projects (such as software development, design, or research) may have access to subscriber information when needed to perform their work. All contractors are bound by confidentiality agreements and may use the information only for the contracted purpose.

8.4 Aggregated and Anonymized Reporting

We may publish aggregated and anonymized data in research reports, marketing materials, impact reports, and similar publications. Aggregated and anonymized data does not identify individual subscribers or organizations.

8.5 Legal Compliance and Protection

We may disclose information when required by law, court order, subpoena, or government request, or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of Mission Increase, our subscribers, or others.

8.6 Business Transfers

If Mission Increase is involved in a merger, acquisition, asset sale, or similar transaction, subscriber information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will provide notice before personal information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

8.7 What We Do Not Do

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, for any purpose.

We do not share your personal information with third parties for their own marketing purposes. If Mission Increase co-promotes events or programs with partner organizations, we may send our subscribers information about those partnerships through our own communications, but we do not provide subscriber lists to partners.

9. Your Privacy Rights

Mission Increase extends the following privacy rights to all subscribers, regardless of where you live. These rights apply to the personal information we hold about you.

9.1 Right to Access

You may request a copy of the personal information we have about you.

9.2 Right to Correction

You may request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete information.

9.3 Right to Deletion

You may request that we delete your personal information, including your Mi Advisor conversation history. We will honor deletion requests subject to limited exceptions, such as information we are legally required to retain (for example, tax and financial records).

9.4 Right to Portability

You may request a copy of your information in a portable, machine-readable format.

9.5 Right to Object or Restrict Processing

You may object to or request that we restrict certain types of processing, such as marketing communications. You may unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time through the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. Unsubscribing from marketing does not affect transactional communications, which we must continue to send as part of operating your account.

9.6 Right to Withdraw Consent

Where we process information based on your consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal.

9.7 How to Exercise Your Rights

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at miacademy@missionincrease.org. Please describe the nature of your request. We may ask you to provide additional information to verify your identity before processing your request. We will respond to your request generally within 30 days, and in no case longer than required by applicable law.

9.8 Authorized Agents

If you would like to designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, the agent must provide written authorization from you and may need to verify their own identity.

9.9 No Discrimination

We will not deny service, charge different prices, or provide a different level of service because you exercised a privacy right.

10. International Data Transfers

Mi Academy is operated from the United States. When you use Mi Academy from outside the United States, your personal information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. The data protection laws of these countries may differ from the laws of your country of residence.

Where required by applicable law (such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation or the United Kingdom's data protection laws), our international data transfers are protected through appropriate legal safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission and, where applicable, our service providers' certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

By using Mi Academy, you acknowledge that your personal information will be processed in the United States and other jurisdictions as described above.

11. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include encryption in transit and at rest where appropriate, access controls limiting internal access to authorized personnel, and contractual security obligations with our service providers.

No security system is perfect. Despite our safeguards, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify affected subscribers without unreasonable delay, and in any event no later than required by applicable law.

12. Your Privacy Rights

This section provides additional information for California residents under the California Consumer Privacy Act ("CCPA") and the California Privacy Rights Act ("CPRA"). It supplements the rights described in Section 9 above using California-specific terminology.
