Course Overview

Introduction to Ministry Culture

The invisible force shaping your fundraising results.

About the Course

Culture isn't the values on your website. It's the unspoken beliefs embedded in your daily decisions: what gets celebrated, whose job fundraising is, what "success" really means beneath the official definition.

Most nonprofit leaders have never examined these assumptions directly, which means they're working against invisible forces they don't know are there.

This course introduces four cultural dimensions that shape fundraising effectiveness in every non-profit, tells the honest story of how culture either accelerates or undermines everything else you're trying to build, and points toward the Annual Fundraising Plan you'll develop throughout this topic, a document that can only work in an organization whose culture has been aligned to support it.

"We were celebrating all the wrong things, like big donations at our annual gala, and wondering why we couldn't build deeper champion relationships. Culture change is slow, but this course gave me language and concepts to start leading that change intentionally."

Frequently asked questions

We have a good team and a solid mission. Are we really in need of culture work?

Most organizations with culture problems don't know they have them,  or they've attributed their fundraising struggles to strategy, staffing, or market conditions when the real issue is internal. The diagnostic questions in this course aren't designed to produce guilt; they're designed to produce clarity. Many leaders discover that one or two small shifts in what they celebrate or how they define success unlocks improvement they couldn't get from any tactics course.

Is "culture change" something a single leader can actually accomplish?

Culture is shaped primarily by leaders,  what they model, what they celebrate, what they tolerate, and what stories they tell. You can begin changing your organization's culture without anyone else's permission. The Intermediate course in this topic, Culture of Participation, goes deep on the change management side of this. This course simply helps you see clearly what you're working with.

Does this course address board culture specifically, or just staff culture?

Both. Board culture is often the most significant factor in whether transformational giving practices actually take hold in an organization. When boards celebrate transactional metrics and staff operate from relational ones, the friction undermines both. This course touches on board, staff, and executive leadership culture, and the courses deeper in the topic go further into each.
