Mi Academy — Specialty 8
Leadership
Strengthen your board, clarify governance, and develop champions who lead alongside you with skill, conviction, and a shared sense of ownership over the mission.
What You Will Build
Your Board Development Plan
Across these four courses, you will develop a Board Development Plan: a one-year roadmap that assesses your current board health, names specific development priorities, maps action steps and owners, tracks your recruitment pipeline, and defines what board success looks like for your ministry. This is a leadership document, not just an HR checklist.

The Four Courses
From board basics to champion leadership
Introductory
Introduction to Ministry Leadership
Great boards are built, not found. This course introduces Mi's perspective on ministry leadership, the vision for a board that leads with theological conviction, and the difference between a governance board and a champion board. It sets the context for everything you will build across this specialty.
30–45 min • Vision-casting
Foundational
Board Basics
This practical course covers the fundamentals of board development: what healthy boards do, how to recruit well, how to orient new members, how to address underperformance, and how to lead a board that is genuinely engaged with the mission. Mi Advisor will walk you through drafting a working Board Development Plan for your specific situation.
45–60 min • Practical development, Mi Advisor drafting
Intermediate
Board Roles and Governance
Clarity about roles prevents most board-staff conflicts before they start. This course goes deeper into the governance side of board leadership: what boards are responsible for, what staff are responsible for, how to structure productive board meetings, and how to develop board members who understand both their authority and their limits. Strategic frameworks and real case studies.
60–75 min • Governance strategy
Advanced
Champion Leadership
The most effective boards are filled with champions who have moved to Ownership, not just donors who agreed to a governance role. This advanced course explores what champion leadership looks like, how to develop board members as champion-makers, and how to lead a board that is genuinely on mission rather than just on paper. You will finalize your Board Development Plan here.
75–90 min • Identity and champion leadership
"Your board does not just govern your ministry. At its best, it champions your mission and invites others to join you."
